This prestigious project involved working closely with the book’s author, Libby Gurr, to bring context to the recreation of Shakespeare’s Globe on bankside. It involved visiting the site, taking our own photographs and delving into Theo Crosby’ architectural plans at Pentagram. We kept he design simple and chose subtle cues like Monotype’s Poliphilus typeface and it’s italic companion Blado to reflect the Elizabethan period.
The English guidebook sold well and we were commissioned to produce versions in French, German and Japanese. In each case we worked alongside Libby and academic translators.
Following Shakespeare’s Globe we worked alongside Libby on a sister publication that told the story Shakespeare’s first London playhouse.
